Table Tennis Male Semi-Finals: KE vs SH

Pubz Comm Reporter: Liu Chen Yao

We are the best although we lost, since we tried our best to fight!!

On 18th January, our male team lost to the Shearites in the Semi-finals of the table tennis IHG. However, as a reporter who has seen the whole match, I am deeply impressed by the courage and persistence shown by our great players. They tried every step of the way to win the glory for our hall.

Dat played for the 1st single against Niqi from Sheares Hall. Although Dat played quite well, he lost by 0 to 3 perhaps due to the fact that Niqi is more trained. Liang Hai long and Song Jun Ying played the 1st double. Unfortunately we lost again. Su shu played the 2nd single for our hall. As we already lost our previous two rounds, this was the crucial moment which would determine our victory or our defeat. Su shu tried his best to retrieve the situation, yet by lack of fortune, he conceded the match, and at this precise moment we knew we have lost the whole game.

At the end of this game, we did not hide the disappointment on our faces, but we still held hope for all of the other KEVII IHG players. Despite their defeat, our Table Tennis team did not fail to show the fighting spirit characteristic of the KEVIIan soul, and so we believe that in next year’s IHG, they will come back in full force, more prepared than ever to win the game.

KEVII Swim Team for IHG

Pubz Comm Reporter: Matilda Lee

———————————————–

The morning of 19th January, blessed with sunshine, was an exciting one for the 12-membered KEVII swim team. Let me recount my observations and experience.

I rushed down to the SRC because I was told the event started at 930am and was dismayed to find that the Opening Ceremony had yet to even commence. The KR supporters were screaming their lungs out while the swimmers from all halls warmed up in the pool. There weren’t many KEVIIans around at that point of time, so we seemed a little out of place, donning red and just…sitting there quietly.

Still, not to fret!

As time passed by slowly, an increasing number of spectators joined in the crowd. The swimmers were still doing their warm up laps in the pool, some looking pretty intense. Supporters around me started to crane their necks, turning to face the clock on the wall, and asking each other the million dollar question. “When on Earth are the events going to start?!”

The first event started finally at 1145am. Cheers erupted around me. The KEVIIans were flanked by Kent Ridge and Raffles Hall supporters, so our ear drums suffered from arrhythmic banging of plastic pails and the constant smashing of empty PET bottles on the spectator’s gallery. Nonetheless, we cheered for our team and prayed our voices could pierce through the water and reach our friend’s ears.

The first few events went by and it was hard to discern who was who. There was a moment of confused silence after the first 50m race. However after we figured out which lane our swimmers were in (lane 6), the crowd around me began cheering more passionately than before. When it reached the relays, everybody’s attention was piqued. There was a general hike in interest levels and people who were originally seated began to stand.

There were two relay events, freestyle and breast-stroke 4x50m. Our Ladies’ team did us proud and came in 3rd for both events. Our Men’s team didn’t do as well, finishing 5th and 6th in the events respectively, but we surely were proud of their outstanding efforts and team spirit.

The Novelty relays were next and we came in 2nd and 4th in the two medley events. These were amusing to watch but since no prizes were awarded, they didn’t appear to be as competitive.

Our swim team comprises of:-

  • Nick Ng
  • Irene Wong
  • Angele
  • Pei Yi
  • Denyse
  • Emily
  • Chan Tze Khee
  • Chee Yen
  • Ni You
  • Mun Joe
  • Fu Jie
  • Jeng Khay
  • Thomas

Congratulations on a job well done, KEVII Swim team!
