NUS Student Achievement Awards Ceremony 2012

Written by: Adrian Chia

Edited by: Celine Yeap

Congratulations to the 4th Overseas Community Involvement Project (OCIP) team and the 13th Xin Qing Rong Ji (XQRJ) for bringing glory to KEVII Hall!

On 17th February 2012, the annual NUS Student Achievement Awards (SAA) Ceremony was held at the University Cultural Centre (UCC) Auditorium. The SAA is an initiative of the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) to recognize exceptional individual students or student groups who have made noteworthy contributions to the University outside of their academic curriculum. This year, KEVII Hall was represented by two student groups – the 4th OCIP team and the 13th XQRJ, both in the Community Projects (Group) category.

Unlike the past, all nominees were invited to attend the ceremony this year. Suspense was kept to the maximum as the winners were only made known during the event itself – in the words of NUS Deputy President and Provost Prof. Tan Eng Chye, the Guest of Honour, it was like “the Academy Awards style”.

First up from KEVII Hall to receive an award was Mr. Eddie Tan, President of the 55th Junior Common Room Committee (JCRC), who represented the Rag & Flag team 2011 to receive the Special Commendation Award. He was soon up on stage again to receive the Special Achievements to Student Organizations Award, in recognition of the contributions made by the 55th JCRC.

When alas it came to the Community Projects category, a video clip showing all nominees was played before the winners were announced. Our hearts began pounding violently; the intense palpitations were symptomatic of our immense anxiety. When the 4th OCIP team was declared the winner of Trophy Award, we nearly jumped from our seats in sheer delight. We took our time to bask in the glory and limelight; we went up on stage, received the award and took a group photo with Hall Master. It was truly a moment to savour.

A sumptuous buffet dinner marked the end of the ceremony. Amidst all the feasting and mouth-watering food, it was also the perfect opportunity to cam-whore as we sought to preserve the glamour and glory of the night in the form of photos.

KEVIIans at the ceremony

A brief introduction of both committees that did us proud:

The 4th OCIP team, led by Chen Haojin, was in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, between 16-31 May 2011 teaching English and building libraries. Seeking to better the lives of the impoverished communities, the team served in an orphanage, a rural secondary school as well as a primary school at the heart of a slum. This year was the second consecutive time the KEVII OCIP team received the honour.

On the other hand, the 13th XQRJ, headed by Andy Sim, organised the annual regional Chinese song writing and composition competition in 2011. Attracting over a hundred entries from Singapore and Malaysia, the competition culminated in a Grand Final held at the UCC Auditorium. Adding much vibrancy to the NUS and KEVII cultural scene, the committee members had put in countless hours making the event a great success.

Eddie, our JCRC president also commented, “It was comforting that the University is recognising what we do in Hall as an important part of NUS. I also wish to congratulate the OCIP team and XQRJ, for they truly deserved the awards after putting in so much, not for the CCA points, but for what they believe in and what their committees stand for.”

Haojin, leader of the 4th OCIP team, wishes to express his gratitude to the SAA selection committee for the recognition; KEVII Hall for providing the team unwavering support; and of course, all OCIP team members for their effort and sweat! Even though the group of started off as strangers from different backgrounds, the same spirit of volunteerism allowed all difficulties to be overcome and the project to be accomplished. He believed the award should not be the destination, “It is the beginning of more enthusiastic people joining volunteer work.”

Dreams set sail from XQRJ

Written by Mao Yinan

Are the contestants once shined in XQRJ still keep pursuing their dreams of music? Whether they choose music or not, the legendary experience in XQRJ has already been engraved in their journey of life. Now, let us gently lift the veil of time, and get updated with their glorious recent life!
Since we have limited space here, I will only choose from several contestants with outstanding performance.
Chan Yong Kang, the winner of the 12th XQRJ, already has one company’s offer to buy his entry song.
Luo Zhanbin, the 13th XQRJ 1st runner up, is currently studying in Taiwan. He has become one official song writer in Touch Music Publishing Pte Ltd.! After reading his facebook page, I found that Zhanbin has made his latest MV-I just love you. Compared with the 18-year-old boy, no doubt Zhanbin has grown up a lot since the XQRJ competition. Wearing a pair of sunglasses, holding the guitar and singing, Zhanbin looks quite handsome. Seeing his confidence, I am sure his future is as bright as a new sun. Here we attach the youtube link of his MV “I just love you” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0ioWjuDsJo&feature=relmfuPlease enjoy!

Zhanbin in 13th XQRJ (the highest boy)

It's been a year since his performance in XQRJ

Zhou Zijian, 1st runner up in the 12th XQRJ, has signed a Malaysian music company, leading a successful music career. Recently, Zijian has launched his own album, “Just wish you can hear”. Let’s see how he introduced his own album –
“Just wish you can hear” DEMO album was released in August 2011, through FACEBOOK order and friends’ introduction and recommendation. Until this October we have sold 150 albums. For me, sales record is not the major concern, what I care most is how everyone think of our music. Has anyone been touched by it? “Just wish you can hear” DEMO album is a simple DIY album, which contains 15 original works. Although it’s not beautifully packaged, we have done our best. We are not professional musicians, but just a group of enthusiastic and realistic dream chasers. We cannot put down our work, but we still love music, that’s why we chose this way to pursue our dream…….. Many many thanks  to friends for their support and help …… thank you .
Interested students can get access the album facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/%E5%AD%90%E6%83%B3%E4%BD%A0%E8%81%BD%E5%81%A5/165655680172133   We also attach here the youtube link to one song, Dear John, in “Just wish you can hear” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGu22TPByCw

XQRJ wishes all the previous contestants continue a bright future! Let dreams set sail from here.

Banner is up!

Written by Mao Yinan

XQRJ design team worked overtime several nights and finally released their remarkable work, which was unanimously praised. This year, Xin Qing Rong Ji uses bright grass green as the main theme color. Compared to the romantic blue last year, it certainly looks more youthful and buoyance. Applying the latest fashion of color collision, the background is dotted with pure white and sexy peach. Plus the components of music notes, clouds, and the classic XQRJ baby, the whole design looks lovely, lively, and vividly eye-catching.

Xin Qing Rong Ji Is Back!

Written by Mao Yinan

The curtain of Xin Qing Rong Ji Regional Chinese Song Writing Competition is once again opened. It’s the 14th time we have come under the spot light and provide a great platform for all students in Singapore and Malaysia to showcase their talent, creativity and buoyance!

It’s been fourteen years, and XQRJ has gradually grown from a child into a young adult. This year, XQRJ organizing committee has modified and improved the content of the contest, the purpose of which is to attract more talented participants to showcase their gift of composition or lyrics writing.

Participants will have three categories to choose from. Category A, song composition which has been successfully conducted by previous XQRJ, requires participants to create a full song, including music and lyrics. Besides that, we add Category B: lyrics writing, and Category C: music composition. As the name suggests, Cat B participants will write lyrics based on the music provided by our official publishing house:  Touch Music Publishing Pte Ltd., while Cat C participants will write music based on the lyrics provided by Touch.

Needless to say, the modifications to the competition rules are made to open a window for talented students who specialize in whichever area of composition. As such, we expect more entries this year to make XQRJ a best show ever! We are ready, what about you?

Submission was open the day before yesterday, and it is only 62 days before the submission deadline: December 11, 2011! Preliminary Date: December 15, 2011, Grand Final Date: February 12, 2012. To make it an excellent show, XQRJ program team, design team, and marketing team are currently working in full swing.

As an old saying goes, hunger breeds discontent. For us, sponsorship is our bread. Fortunately, XQRJ organizing committee has recently signed contract with our official website sponsor: Register the World.

Go go XQRJ!

Official website: www.xqrj.com will open soon, so stay tuned!
More news will be updated weekly.

The 12th XQRJ Regional Chinese Song Writing Competition – Grand Final

Writer: Adrian Chia

Always one of the biggest events to be held by KEVII Hall, XQRJ once again put up a successful Grand Final on 1stFebruary 2010. Marking a break from past years, the 12th Grand Final was held in The Republic Culture Centre of Republic Polytechnic, located in Woodlands. During the event, 12 contestants representing 10 final original compositions would battle one another in terms of performance, originality and the quality of the lyrics and melody. They were to be judged by 4 highly critical, experienced and professional individuals from the Chinese musical scene.

At 7.45pm, the event began with a rousing hip-hop dance from Music Forest dance troupe. Hosted by Y.E.S. 93.3 FM DJ 萧嘉惠, the energy level of the audience was whipped up even further before the competition proper went underway.

Full of energy indeed!

The first pair of contestants Ping Seng and Yuan Teng performed their original piece entitled “长不大”. It was a soothing song portraying the deep inner feelings of the composer, who did not want to grow up in order to retain the memories and feelings of being young.

You can almost feel the beauty of the song through this picture

Next up was Zhan Bin, the youngest contestant of the night, with his song “挑战巅峰”. His style was plainly rock to the max, and he sang with so much energy and zest that he nearly screamed the whole song through the microphone.

Rock it rock it rock it!

The third song “海里的记忆” was an entry from Jiayi. The style of the song was exactly like the shy and quiet girl who composed it. Following that, Kim Kok, with his piece entitled “解药”, presented a story of a boy who was seeking an antidote to his heartbreak after his girlfriend left him. The fifth contestant, Chi Kien, was an interesting character. Before he started singing, he told the audience to shut their eyes in order to appreciate his song “逃” better. Unlike many other contestants, he did not come with a live band. Instead, he sang to a simple guitar accompaniment. He might not have the looks of a celebrity, yet he successfully captivated most of the audience with his heavenly voice and touching lyrics. His was the first song of the night to receive more compliments than criticisms from the judges.

After a short break, the competition resumed with “保存” from Yong Kang. It was not just another love song, as this particular love story earned the praises of the judges. The gist of the song was about a love-sick boy expressing his undying love for the girlfriend who left him, by preserving memories of the broken relationship. Besides the melodious tune, the judges also fell in love with the lyrics which was full of imagery.

The talented Yong Kang who won the judges' hearts

The following contestant Geraldine Lau sang her entry of “无可取代”, which was deemed to have too many repetitions in the lyrics by the judges. Geraldine also received a few tips from the judges about ways to tighten up the structure of her lyrics. Sarah and Xie Ying, two contestants from Eusoff Hall of NUS, were next with their song “小王子与玫瑰”.

Our fellow uni-mates do NUS proud.

After listening to numerous entries of love songs, it was a refreshing change of style and theme as their lively song centered around the story of Little Prince’s love-hate relationship with the only rose on his planet. The song probably had the catchiest chorus among all the entries. Simon Chong, who performed “先让我明白”, had a tough time with the judges. One of them commented that the violin accompaniment was redundant, while another commented that his lyrics were confusing as he ‘added the past into the future’ in one of his lines. Ming Swin, the last contestant, adopted a rock style in “让她走”.

Looks professional. Pity he didn't win the judges over.

He also brought along a professional band and singer who sang on his behalf. The judges apparently did not like his song they commented that the style was rather stale.

When all the contestants had presented their pieces, members of the audience were asked to vote for the entry of their choice. As the judges took their time to deliberate the results, 3 groups of guest performers kept the audience entertained. Undoubtedly, the most entertaining of all was the performance by Jovi Theng, who was one of the judges for the night.

A professional is truly a professional

He wowed the crowd with two songs from his recently-released album, as well as the very popular “情非得已”, a song composed by him which many among the audience were certainly familiar with (recall F4 and the wildly popular Meteor Gardens). What a rare opportunity to listen to the original composer performing his own song!

With the clock ticking away and the night getting rather late, the results were finally announced. The 9 prizes were essentially shared between 4 entries. “解药” by Kim Kok won the Best Song and the Best Melody awards. Chi Kien’s “逃” was the biggest winner of the night, bagging the awards for best performance, the most popular song and the third prize.

All that hard work, paid off at last

The two girls from Eusoff Hall, Sarah and Xie Ying, were deemed the Best Composers and their song also clinched the second prize. The first prize was won by Yong Kang’s love song “保存”, which also won the award for best lyrics.

The event finally came to a close at 11.15pm amidst loud applause from the audience. Unlike many other concerts or performances, the XQRJ Grand Final was certainly very unique as the audience could listen to truly original compositions from budding song writers and be treated to a feast of live band performances. It was also truly remarkable that an event of such scale was organised by a committee with just 25 members. All their hard work, sweat and effort for the past few months have finally reached fruition. Congratulations to all the winners as well as the 12thXQRJ Committee!

Good job, XQRJ!

A Short Interview with the Head of 10th XQRJ Committee

Writer: Adrian Chia
Editor: Chan Yu Kit

Koh Yueting

Koh Yueting

1. How do you feel after receiving the NUS Student Achievement award on behalf of XQRJ?

I feel proud of XQRJ, not only X10 but the many generations up till now as well.  I’m privileged to be the representative to receive this award, but the recognition goes out to all XQRJians. In short, there were mixed feelings of nostalgia, satisfaction and pride!

2. What were the ‘secrets’ that made 10th XQRJ so successful?

One open secret would be the generous assistance from our ‘laorens’ (ex-XQRJ members) and various hall residents. I’ve expressed my gratitude to them many times and still, thank you to you all! =)

Of course, not forgetting my X10 members, who strived and persevered on despite the multiple strains. There were many times when they broke down in stress, faced disappointment due to high expectations and the thought of ‘giving up’ flashed through their minds, but they chose to encourage one another instead.

The teamwork, the criticism, the vision, the sacrifice and the support make them strong and different.

3. Choose one adjective that best describes your committee.

Dedicated.

4. Tell us about the most special / craziest / meaningful / memorable thing that you all did as a committee.

During the early phase of our publicity, we wore our green XQRJ shirts and toured around the whole campus to publicise our event. We gave out brochures along the way and carried an enlarged version of our posters along. We attracted a lot of curious stares, and even those on the buses were not spared. Actually, it was initially dismissed as a crazy idea and luckily, we decided to be ‘crazy’ together.

Other memorable activities include our banner painting, photo-taking, overseas trip and working through the night in X room, lying on the ancient mattress.

5. Any words of wisdom for the current batch of XQRJ committee?

Cherish the times in XQRJ working as a team together and don’t be shy to try new stuff! Challenge yourself with new ideas and the ‘laorens’ will always be around to provide support! 心情溶剂加油!

6. On a more personal note, why did you join XQRJ?

I joined XQRJ for 2 years, 9th and 10th XQRJ.

For the first year when I signed up, frankly speaking, I did not even know what XQRJ was! I remembered during the CCA fair, the XQRJ laorens were very enthusiastic and although nobody approached me personally (probably I looked too quiet and reserved..), I knew this would be a fun committee and put it as my first choice.

As for the second year, the reason was very simple. I had grown attached to the XQRJ family and as part of this family, I wanted to contribute more and witness the further growth of XQRJ. Sounds quite emotional ya?

7. As a KEVIIan, what were your best memories in hall?

The multiple suppers and ‘talk-cock’ sessions! All the activities I joined in hall allowed me to get to know interesting people and they never failed to share with me knowledge that I didn’t have before. Sometimes I might have felt guilty and thought that I should have spent the time studying, but seriously, after shifting out of hall, my night life has become so quiet and boring. Haha. I really miss the laughters, birthday celebrations and sabo at 12 midnight.

I will also treasure the intensive working days in XQRJ, KEWOC, GH block committee and Float, where I lost track of the difference between day and night. :p

8. Any other things you would like to say to fellow KEVIIans?

Keep up the vibrancy of hall life! Jiayou everyone!

9. Interviewee’s own addition: Words to my X10 members

Not sure if you all still remember these 4 words: 斗志, 泪水, 激情, 欢笑。

You let me experience all these precious emotions and it has been great working with all of you! =)
