Do you still remember the tune of the school bell? Do you still remember the sound of footsteps along the corridors during recess time? Or the time when you and your friends stayed up the night in the library because there was an important test ahead? And do you remember the last time you wore your SCHOOL UNIFORM? Last Monday, KE VII Hall brought many of us back to the time when NUS was our future , and our past became the present. Presenting to you… BACK TO SCHOOL, Block Day 2009!
This year, the theme of Block Day was clearly outlined in the activities and attire of the event. In the lovely and comfy Comm Hall, several KEVIIans were decked in their school uniforms, school tees and etc. Those who did not brought theirs to hall tried their best to dress up as a schoolboy or a schoolgirl. The uniforms were now smaller, but it brought to people the nostalgia of secondary school and the like. The hall was decorated with balloons and a big “Back To School” banner and all 5 Block Shirts were also hung over the ceiling. That reminded me of Pasar Malam (Malay for night market).
At the centre, there was one square booth consisting of several food stations. First up was the omelette prepared on the spot by the block comm members. The omelette was deliciously mixed with button mushrooms and cheese. It smelt just like what you ate before going to school in the morning, with the liquid yolk swirling in your mouth and the cheesy smell filling your nostrils. Next, we had hot dogs with fillings of your choice. And then we had some nice soda that thrilled your tastebuds with its tremendous taste and chilling sensation. Of course, there were other beverages prepared as well. If you were finding some snacks that will fill your tummy, sandwiches with eggs or tuna was available as well. One of the favourites was actually the chocolate fondue station. You were given several fruits to dip them into that thick liquid and just imagine how the chocolate slips down your throat!
Delicious food aside, there were also performances. KE Band performed on and off throughout the night, playing familiar songs that attracted many KEVIIans to sing along :)
Alongside that, there were some exciting games going on around the hall! They were not complicated games, yet they were not simple either. The games may seem childish at first sight, but once you participated in it, one would realize that it was not just kid’s play! For examplel, one of the stations hosted by Cunzhi consisted of players having to turn around many many times before colouring the comics provided with a still-spinning mind!
Another was a memory game where you had to remember all the numbers by sequence, and at the same time tap the number plate on the wall. There was alsothe traditional hopscotch that attracted many girls to relive their younger days!
All in all, Block Day was an event that brought back fond memories of school days, with the uniforms and all the simple yet fun games. Well done Block Day Comm :) The back-to-school atmosphere sure made us want to relive our school days again!
