A Short Interview with the Head of 10th XQRJ Committee

Writer: Adrian Chia
Editor: Chan Yu Kit

Koh Yueting

Koh Yueting

1. How do you feel after receiving the NUS Student Achievement award on behalf of XQRJ?

I feel proud of XQRJ, not only X10 but the many generations up till now as well.  I’m privileged to be the representative to receive this award, but the recognition goes out to all XQRJians. In short, there were mixed feelings of nostalgia, satisfaction and pride!

2. What were the ‘secrets’ that made 10th XQRJ so successful?

One open secret would be the generous assistance from our ‘laorens’ (ex-XQRJ members) and various hall residents. I’ve expressed my gratitude to them many times and still, thank you to you all! =)

Of course, not forgetting my X10 members, who strived and persevered on despite the multiple strains. There were many times when they broke down in stress, faced disappointment due to high expectations and the thought of ‘giving up’ flashed through their minds, but they chose to encourage one another instead.

The teamwork, the criticism, the vision, the sacrifice and the support make them strong and different.

3. Choose one adjective that best describes your committee.

Dedicated.

4. Tell us about the most special / craziest / meaningful / memorable thing that you all did as a committee.

During the early phase of our publicity, we wore our green XQRJ shirts and toured around the whole campus to publicise our event. We gave out brochures along the way and carried an enlarged version of our posters along. We attracted a lot of curious stares, and even those on the buses were not spared. Actually, it was initially dismissed as a crazy idea and luckily, we decided to be ‘crazy’ together.

Other memorable activities include our banner painting, photo-taking, overseas trip and working through the night in X room, lying on the ancient mattress.

5. Any words of wisdom for the current batch of XQRJ committee?

Cherish the times in XQRJ working as a team together and don’t be shy to try new stuff! Challenge yourself with new ideas and the ‘laorens’ will always be around to provide support!

6. On a more personal note, why did you join XQRJ?

I joined XQRJ for 2 years, 9th and 10th XQRJ.

For the first year when I signed up, frankly speaking, I did not even know what XQRJ was! I remembered during the CCA fair, the XQRJ laorens were very enthusiastic and although nobody approached me personally (probably I looked too quiet and reserved..), I knew this would be a fun committee and put it as my first choice.

As for the second year, the reason was very simple. I had grown attached to the XQRJ family and as part of this family, I wanted to contribute more and witness the further growth of XQRJ. Sounds quite emotional ya?

7. As a KEVIIan, what were your best memories in hall?

The multiple suppers and ‘talk-cock’ sessions! All the activities I joined in hall allowed me to get to know interesting people and they never failed to share with me knowledge that I didn’t have before. Sometimes I might have felt guilty and thought that I should have spent the time studying, but seriously, after shifting out of hall, my night life has become so quiet and boring. Haha. I really miss the laughters, birthday celebrations and sabo at 12 midnight.

I will also treasure the intensive working days in XQRJ, KEWOC, GH block committee and Float, where I lost track of the difference between day and night. :p

8. Any other things you would like to say to fellow KEVIIans?

Keep up the vibrancy of hall life! Jiayou everyone!

9. Interviewee’s own addition: Words to my X10 members

Not sure if you all still remember these 4 words: 斗志, 泪水, 激情, 欢笑。

You let me experience all these precious emotions and it has been great working with all of you! =)

The preliminary selection for the 11th XQRJ National Chinese Song Writing Competition was held on 19/12/2008. A total of 106 songs were received by the committee this year. Out of these, 10 songs were to be selected to enter the final round of competitions.

By 10am sharp, the four judges invited by the XQRJ committee entered the SCRC room, the venue for the preliminary selection. The four judges were: composer 陈炯顺 (who recently composed a new song for SHE, 月光手札), composer 黄志平(who composed 平行线, sung by 金莎), lyricist 刑增华 (who wrote the lyrics of 路弯弯, sung by巫启贤) and singer 洪俊扬 (who released an album after winning 1st runner-up in Singapore’s Project Superstar).

The judges listened to the demo recordings sent in by each and every contestant. Working all the way until 4pm, with short breaks in between, the judges selected 12 songs instead of 10 to enter the final round after a final review.

Steamboat night for XQRJ

Author: Xiao Shuang
Editor: Liu Chen Yao

The ‘steamboat night’ for Xing Qing Rong Ji (XQRJ) was held on 27/10/08. As an annual event, it was an opportunity for building closer rapport among the committee members. The night started with everyone busily but happily involved in preparing the food. Though the event went through the same routine every year, there were different sentimental values that could be cherished each year. It was a simple but fun-filled and enjoyable night, with all of us getting together, chit-chatting and gossiping and laughing all the way. Even the cleaning up job, when carried out by all of us together, did not seem to be tedious at all …

NUS Student Achievement Awards Ceremony 2008

Author & Photos: Adrian Chia
Edited by: Chan Yu Kit

Congratulations to the 10th Xin Qing Rong Ji (XQRJ) Organising Committee and the Rag & Flag Committee 2007 for receiving the awards! You certainly have done the Hall proud!

The NUS Student Achievement Awards Ceremony 2008 was held at the Grand Ballroom of the Sheraton Towers. XQRJ, having successfully organised its annual Chinese song writing competition, received the Group Award for the Arts and Culture Category, while the Rag & Flag Committee received the Group Award for the Community Service Category for their outstanding performance during Rag & Flag 2007. Both committees really did awesome jobs and were well deserving of their awards!

During the awards ceremony, the XQRJ committee members were also invited on stage to present their theme song. “追踪阳光的希望,音乐为我呼唤。哪怕世事变幻无常,音乐是我心情溶剂……” As they sang harmoniously in unison, their enthusiasm and strong bonding as a committee were evident. Perhaps those were the greatest secrets that enabled their unprecedented success?

Great food specially prepared by the chefs of this five-star hotel was also in store for the award winners. Salad, lamb chop, gravy chicken, spaghetti and sashimi formed part of the menu, with many more appetite-whetting desserts waiting in store for second helpings. The best part of everything was probably the fact that dinner was served buffet-style, meaning it was “eat-all-you-can”!

Look at the Greedy Faces!

Look at the Happy Faces!

The event ended at around 9.30pm, but most people were not prepared to leave just as yet. Precious memories were yet to be captured in the form of photos, so groups of people started gathering and flashbulbs of cameras started going off incessantly.

With Hall Master!
