After a tiring day at school, have you returned to hall feeling just a little jealous of our seemingly glamourous neighbours across the road? From the outside, our neighbours seem to be living in the lap of luxury, with condominium-like facilities available at their doorstep, not to mention beautiful landscaping of artificial waterfalls and large open squares like the ones below.
Now, don’t lie to yourself, surely you must have been swayed at some point in time to give up your hard-fought place here for the greener pastures yonder? But before you pack your bags and head across the road to enjoy the high life, we’d like you to pause for a moment and consider: is PGP really better than KE7, or is there more than meets the eye? Hopefully, this short dissertation can cast aside those thoughts about vacating our beloved hall, when you understand how our hall is truly superior (at least in the aspects we considered).
Perhaps, the greatest point of contention is the lifts they have that make the journey back to the apartment less arduous and comfortable. No doubt, E blockers on the 8th floor would very much welcome this amenity. But are lifts really all good? They consume large amounts of electricity and remove the need for us to exercise as we make our way to school each day. Having lifts makes the earth hotter and our girths larger! Not so good after all…
Parking lots have a much greater impact on our lives than you think! It has been shown by geologists that they are heat islands, which have the power to change our weather locally. By shading the parking lots, the heat and glare resulting from them can be significantly reduced.
But since many of us don’t drive, the parking lots are of little significance and consequence; being just a plot of asphalt-coated land which we pass by on our way to breakfast or dinner every day.
Like people always say, “a hungry man is an angry man”. Do not think that the place where we dine is not important, for it is our dining atmosphere that affects our mood and ultimately, our well-being. So where do the residents of KE7 have their meals every day?
It is none other than the KE7 dining hall, which is located right at the heart of the hall. Seemingly quiet and deserted throughout most times of the day, the place will start bustling with activity once breakfast/dinner time draws near. The biggest plus point of dining in hall: You get to eat with your friends! What’s better than being able to chat with your buddies over a good meal?
Unlike in hall, our friends in PGP do not enjoy the luxury of catered meals. Thus, they spend their meal times in the PGP canteen, which offers a “large” variety of food, ranging from the most common Chinese cuisine to more exotic ones like Vietnamese food. Then again, no matter how large the variety is, one will definitely be bored at some point in time. Imagine eating from the same stalls for one semester… and the many more semesters to come…
Of course, we have not left out the most important aspect: Study rooms.
As diligent students who spend a large (and we mean LARGE) amount of time studying, the environment of the study rooms is of utmost importance.
Well-equipped with bright lighting and work desks, PGP’s study room definitely looks like a good place for one to mug through the night.
But wait! In comparison with this:
KE7’s study room is comparable to none. Not only is it roomy and well-ventilated, one does not need to worry about being too tired after a hard day’s work. Simply take a walk outside, enjoy the beautiful landscaping of our hall and you’ll be fully invigorated to continue the battle with your textbooks!
If that’s not enough, there are always the ever-convenient block lounges available and accessible to all.
So, is hall or residence better? Well, the answer is pretty obvious…
