KE 1: TH 2
This Monday 4th January 2008, our male soccer team had its first IHG match against Temasek hall at the SRC field, kicking off at 6pm.
It was important for us to get a good start, so that we could then control the game and play good passing football. And it all began very well. For the first few minutes, the team set to the task with aplomb, playing short, simple and effective passes, chasing every time they lost possession of the ball and closing down the opposition. The highlight was Andy’s superb strike rattling the crossbar after he had found space and time to place a good shot. With the team playing this kind of free- flowing football, it was only logical for us to score first when H, who was always going to be hard to handle for the opposition, put it in. 1-0 to KE VII, and the relief was evident on everybody’ s faces. Up to this minute, everything was going according to plan.
Then it all changed however. For some reason, KE became complacent after the opening goal, and from then on, we were always on the back pedal. Allowing the Temasek players to control the game was definitely not a good idea, as we then had to spend the best part of the game chasing the ball and getting tired in the process. Despite the shouts from the supporters on the touchline, the players were finding it very hard to push up, and we were very relieved when the referee whistled for half time with KE barely holding on to its precious lead.
Half- time was all about encouraging the players to play the proper football they had started with again. However, it has to be said that the pitch was very boggy, and every step required real effort. Nevertheless, the team got enough time to talk and motivate themselves.
Going on the pitch for the second half with the best intentions, we still somehow failed to gain control of the game, and found ourselves on the defensive again. The goalkeeping of Terence was brilliant on several occasions when he single handedly kept us in the game by pulling out stunning saves. The best of them was probably a reflex save after a Temasek player headed from point blank range. However, we were only able to hold on to our lead for so long, with the equalizer coming eventually.
Again, this was another occasion for the team to pick itself up and try again. But, by then, everyone was exhausted by the constant chasing, and it showed, as several of our players went down with cramps. After we had used up all our substitutions for fatigued players, several had to battle on and give it their all.
Here, a special mention goes to Kevin, who bravely battled on despite being totally drained, and to Hansley and Raymond, who were trying their best in central midfield. Although several of the KE players were constantly pushing to their limits, the better condition of the Temasek team showed when they eventually got their second goal, which would prove to be the decisive goal of the match.
The team has to be praised for trying their best to come back, with Christopher coming close to the dying moments. However, it was not to be, and our first IHG match ended in defeat.
Now, we can only concentrate on how we are going to play for the next match. After the game, comments like ‘We gave it away’ and ‘We stopped playing after the first goal’ show how disappointed we are. Looking at the bright side of things, many of our players showed that they possessed excellent technical skills, H being as untenable as last year, and the keeper showing very safe hands. KE Soccer knows it can do better than this, and it is eagerly waiting for the next occasion to prove itself.
