Today history was made in a heart-stopping, 5-hour long tennis finals at the SRC between underdogs KE7 and the defending champion Eusoff Hall. KE had beaten Eusoff in prelims, but only just. The question on everyone’s minds was, “could we do it again?” Would a team of dedicated tennis players, a pool of ferociously noisy supporters, and some radical changes in lineup do the trick?
Nothing could have been more dramatic than the way KE7 clawed its way up after losing the first two matches. Nothing could have been more spectacular than watching Vu and Khoi pull off one of their magnificent comebacks in their first set (from 1-4 down, to win the set), or to watch a tense tie-breaker 3rd set in which Eusoff nearly caught up. Nothing could have been more suspenseful than watching Sandiip, the last singles player, lose the first set, win the second by a miracle, and maintain efficient and unhurried play through the third to finally outlast his opponent. And nothing could have been more rewarding than what had seemed out of reach for so much of this evening - victory for the guys’ tennis team!
The finals had started at 7pm and it was nearly midnight before it ended, with no clear winner till the very last game was played. This was a competition in which fortune seemed to favour each side by turns and almost every set was prolonged until supporters were nearly tearing their hair out with anxiety. However, KEVIIans who stayed for all the nerve-racking 5 hours were eventually rewarded by the priceless experience of celebrating what has been all too rare… a KEVIIan gold!
*This is our 2nd finals win in 3 years. Badminton guys won IHG gold in 2004.
Perhaps no words can be more appropriate for this occasion than those from the poem from which our hall motto is derived…
“…Though much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are—
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To STRIVE, to SEEK, to FIND, and NOT TO YIELD.”
- Alfred Lord Tennyson, Ulysses
A more detailed report will be posted up soon. Well done guys!
