25 Jan: Zero, but Points For Honesty! - Netball

Final Score:
KE vs KR - 0 : 20

Our netball team players knew that whatever good was in store for them that day, it would have to be hard-earned. And that was the spirit in which our players strode on the court at Raffles Hall on that chilly Thursday afternoon – the spirit of fighting for victory.

As soon as the match started it was clear that the KR team consisted of experienced players, and it did not take long for everyone present to notice that the Keviian girls were tense. This did play against them, with the first quarter ending with a score of 0-5 in favour of KR. However, these were not easily-earned points for KR. Tense they were indeed, but the Keviian girls were not at all prepared to make life easy for the KR players. Good team play and good defence were the golden rules by which our team abided till the end of the game.

Our players started the second quarter of the game on a noticeable note of urgency. They wanted to score, and it was with determination that the KE girls began to attack. Players like Kim and Eunice looked quite threatening to our opponents on numerous occasions. This did not deter the equally good attacking team of KR from scoring. The game then took an interesting twist when Kim successfully threw the ball through the loop, but this was not considered a successful shot because of a mistake preceding it. Many of those watching the game, score-keepers included, were however mislead into thinking the shot was a successful one. The scores at the end of the second quarter actually read 11-1 in favour of KR.

The beginning of the second half saw our players playing mostly on the defensive. Instances of nervousness on the part of the KE girls could be seen through some of the loose passes being made, but the drive to score was still very much present. It was in fact this very determination which made it difficult for the KR players to score the 9 points they did in the second half, keeping even the KR supporters on the edge of their seats – or rather on the tips of their toes. At the sound of the final whistle, the scores read 20–1 in favour of KR, with KE being awarded the 1 point it actually never earned.

It was at the end of the game when the official scoring sheet had to be signed by the captains that Kim, along with the other KE netball team members, clearly said that they did not agree with the final scores since KE never did score. The scores were corrected to 20-0. “We did lose. But not our pride and honesty”, said Kim with a hearty laugh. Disappointment sure was present among the KE players, but so was the pride of knowing that they had done their level best. That, coupled with the warm team spirit which prevailed among the players, should be enough to make all of us Keviians proud of our netball players.

(The game was not the only thing the KE players lost that day. A ferocious colony of ants at the Raffles Hall’s court feasted on their packed dinner while they were playing!)

24 Jan: So Close! - Table Tennis (F) Semis

For some reason, this year all the racquet sports have ended in extremely close and hard-fought wins or losses! The girls’ table tennis was another close, close match in which we could so easily have gone to finals - but didn’t. Read all about it in this report by girls’ captain Deng Shuo.

KE vs KR: 1 - 4

1st Singles: Dawn (lost 0-3)
1st Doubles: Deng Shuo and Chun Yan (won 3-2)
2nd Singles: Yue Yi (lost 1-3)
2nd Doubles: Wang Liao and Yue Xing (lost 2-3)
3rd Singles: Tang Pan (lost 0-3)

* * *

In the table tennis prelims on the 20th, the table tennis girls had done quite a good job to get into semis. In the intervening period between prelims and semis, the girls trained hard, almost the whole night for two days! On 24th Jan, 8pm, the team played against KR at MPSH2. Now was their opportunity to show the fruits of their labour.

The girls’ team arrived at 7pm and did some warm up. Everyone looked energetic and confident. Many Keviians came dawn to support the semis. Former table tennis captains Bai wei and Zheng Jun also came down in office wear to support and give tactical guidance despite their busy jobs!

1st Singles
The games started at 8pm sharp. Dawn played the first singles against KR. She had vociferous support. She showed her efforts and spirit of never giving up; however, she was outclassed by her experienced opponent (0-3).

1st Doubles
Meanwhile, the 1st girls’ doubles, Chun Yan and Deng Shuo, were also met with strong opponents. They were very tense, leading to many unforced errors. The score was close - KE supporters and the rest of the team watched in growing excitement as both the KE pair and their opponents won 2 matches each!

The fifth match was a rubber. It would decide who won. Everyone held their breath. Chun Yan and Deng Shuo were leading up to 10-2. Only one more point and they would win! But then the momentum was lost and supporters watched in disbelief as KR fought their way back and the score became 10-6. This was quite a strenuous moment. Both sides asked for a break and directed their players. After the break, the players returned to the match. Thanks to a wonderful serve from Chun Yan, the game was won immediately by KE. Everyone cheered for this success!

2nd Singles
The player from KE was our most experienced and skilled senior, Yue Yi. Unfortunately, she was faced with an equally formidable opponent, who took the lead first. However, Yue Yi showed her strong skill and won 1 match. When the 4th match came, KE supporters were abuzz with excitement. The score was quite close and both Yue Yi and her opponent tried hard. It was a pity that Yue Yi lost by 2 points in the end, as this was one of the highest chances we had to win a game. However, she played quite well and the players looking on were cheered by her spirit.

2nd Doubles
The outstanding freshmen Wang Liao and Yue Xing took their places. They had done a good job in the prelims and won the first match in prelims, which enabled KE to go to the semis. Their opponents were quite experienced. However, they did not feel any fear and played quite well. They kept fighting and, just as it had been during the first doubles, the score was a close 2-2!

The rubber came. Keviians all cheered for them and gave them strong support. Wang Liao and Yue Xing were very tense. Unfortunately, they lost in the end. But their efforts were really appreciated, and they had put up a good show for the spectators!

3rd Singles
Tang Pan played at the same time as the 2nd doubles. She was very tense and made some unforced errors, resulting in her losing the first two matches. During break, Sheng Qiu and Zheng Jun (both are former captains) gave her encouragement. It was unfortunate that she lost the 3rd match.

The girls did a good job in the semis, and all the spectators agreed that it was a close fight which could so easily have swung the other way. We have high hopes that they will do even better in next year’s IHG!

Well done table tennis girls!

A player’s point of view:

I am quite proud of my teammates for today’s performance! Although we did not win, we all did our best. The odds were against us from the beginning, as most of our players are freshmen. We really trained hard and did all our best in both training and IHG, and were really delighted that we could make it to the semis!

And today I saw so many Keviians come to support us, I am strongly encouraged. We also owe our great improvement to our male captain Wen Jun and former captain Bai Wei, they came and trained us every time despite not living in hall. And also seniors like Li Ling, Zhi yong, Sheng Qiu, they really gave us good trainings. As the female captain, I am really proud of my teammates. Thanks to them, we formed a good team and gained success. All of my teammates performed pretty well! I hope to see our greater success next year!

21 Jan: The End Of An Innings! - KE Softball

The KE softball team played the rescheduled match against Sheares this morning in poor field conditions caused by excessive rain, which directed the strategies of both teams from the onset.

The main focus of this match was on the pitching rather than on the batting, and Sheares took full advantage in their 1st innings as they reached the 7 run target with 2-down. Thereafter, it was time for our 1st innings. Unfortunately for KE, we were unable to take full advantage and after the first innings, the score stood at 4-7. The ball was slippery and difficult to grip throughout the match. The terry cloth became the pitchers’ best friend for both sides in their quest to wipe off as much mud and dampness from the ball after every pitch. Despite their efforts, mostly wayward pitches meant that almost all the runs were scored off ‘walks’ (awarded to the batter when the pitcher pitches 4 balls that do not land on the strike zone).

In the 2nd innings, KE substituted their pitcher, Dhawal, midway due to poor ball control and Sandiip took over for them. A fine performance from him had Sheares pegged back, and KE was down 4-13. Unfortunately for KE, the clock had almost run down, making victory impossible for us, as in excess of 7 runs were required and no further innings would be played. Thus, our 2nd innings had an almost carnival atmosphere with the fate of the match decided.

Unfortunately, we were unable to add to our tally and the match finished 4-13, officially ending the tournament for the KE softball team, leaving us to ruminate and regroup for a more valiant and fruitful effort next year!

- Dhawal

1st Singles: Dawn (lost 0-3)
1st Doubles: Deng Shuo and Tang Pan (lost 0-3)

3rd Singles: Yue Yi (lost 1-3)

* * *
The guys and girls’ table tennis teams played against KR and TH, and RH and EH respectively on the 20th of Jan 07 at MPSH 2.

I arrived at the SRC at 1 pm,to find both captains (Deng Shuo and Wen Jun) in deep discussion - trying to settle their opening lineup while watching the matches proceed. Unfortunately, KE was not playing the first few matches, and it was 3 pm before the games finally started.

Yu Ye played the first singles against RH. She had vociferous support from her teammates, other Keviians and even some old-time seniors, like Ke Yao and Bai Wei who came back to watch their juniors play. Despite her best efforts, she was outclassed by her more experienced opponent (0-3).

The 1st girls doubles, Tang Pan and Deng Shuo, likewise went down 0-3 to their opponents, but put up a spirited show. Things started looking up for the girls team when Chun Yan reversed the trend with a very competent 3-0 victory in the 2nd singles match. Her experience showed, and her control and speed, aided by her opponent’s nerves and unforced errors, made this a quick match.

Cheered by Chun Yan’s victory, Wang Liao and Yue Xing gave us all an extremely exciting match, as they were evenly matched with the other team, having one more experienced and one less experienced player each. Jittery spectators on both sides followed the match intensely, and small details like a ball served from the wrong court or a serve thrown too low in the air were sufficient to provoke the crowd to loud debate. The score went to 3-2 in our favor, and it was a nail biting finish as the last set finally came down to 12-10. The doubles was so tense that Wang Liao didn’t realize she had hit the winning shot until the team erupted in cheers around her. Ke Yao turned to me and tapped his chest, “Lucky I don’t have a heart problem!”

We had now won 2 matches to be even with RH’s two. The deciding match would be the 3rd singles. Yue Yi, as the most experienced and skilled player in the team, was expected to have good odds against the RH player. However the strain of the moment was evident in her face, and
she made several unforced errors in the first set. She regained her momentum and won the 2nd set. Soon we were in a repeat of the last match, a crucial set in which the scores of each player appeared to be taking turns to go up. Each point she won was a victory, not only
against her opponent but also against her nerves - no mean feat as the match was just as intense as the previous one had been, punctuated by increasingly frequent calls for time-outs. Small details like the ball not being tossed high enough during service again gained great importance, as they could determine the outcome of the match! Despite a dubiously disputed call (on the very last point!) by RH, she prevailed to win 3-2 to the great joy and relief of her team.

Table Tennis (M)

KE vs KR: 1 - 4

1st Singles: Kane (lost 0-3)
1st Doubles: Zhi Yong and Gerber (won 4-1)
2nd Singles: Li Ling (lost 0-3)
2nd Doubles: Shengqiu and Wen Yuan (lost 2-3)
3rd Singles: Teng Fei (lost 1-4)

* * *
KE vs TH: 1 - 4

1st Singles: McVin (lost 0-3)
1st Doubles: Shengqiu and Wen Yuan (lost 0-3)
2nd Singles: Teng Fei (lost 0-3)
2nd Doubles: Zhi Yong and Gerber (won 3-2)
3rd Singles: Li Ling (lost 0-3)

* * *
Meanwhile, the guys’ team had also begun their matches against KR. Kane lost the first singles (0-3) to the more experienced KR player, but he tried his best. Then Zhi Yong and Gerber won the 1st doubles handily with 4-1. They dominated the match all the way as they had a faster spin, were quite experienced and good at attacks, and were playing aggressively.

I was unable to catch the 2nd singles played by Li Ling as the highwire act that was Yue Yi’s 3rd single match was still going on. He played against a very strong opponent and lost 0-3, but showed plenty of spirit.

The second doubles were the deciding match for the guys team - if they did not win this match, KE would lose. Shengqiu and Wen Yuan fought for each point and took the supporters to the edge of cardiac arrythmia once again, as we watched another rubber set being played. The entire girls team was arrayed behind them, which puzzled me as I thought they would rather have the players see them supporting them. Then I noticed the placards they were holding, “We are behind you!”. Ah. Despite the fervent and furious support from their fellow Keviians, the second doubles did not go our way, and they lost 2-3. Anyone who has ever accused KE sportsmen of bo-chapness would have to withdraw that accusation entirely if they had seen the grief with which this result was greeted, and the comradeship with which the players comforted each other.

The 3rd singles, played by Wong Teng Fei, was less consequential but he did his best, ultimately losing 1-4.

The afternoon had already been one of high drama, with elation and bitter disappointment all mixed in together. The girls team was safely in the semis after their win over RH, but the guys had a fight for survival with TH, who had also lost their first match against KR.
The girls eventually lost to EH, and the guys to TH.

Editor’s note:
It was a good show from every member of KE table tennis as they often found themselves unevenly matched with more experienced players from other halls, including IVP players, but soldiered on bravely nonetheless and gave their best all the way. The girls were rewarded by an emotional win over Raffles Hall - the best sign of a team that has invested much time and labour into training together. This could not have been accomplished without the dedication of all those who came back to train the players - Wen Jun, Li Ling and Bai Wei (captain 2 years ago).

The guys too made a commendable effort despite last-minute changes to the doubles pairings, which meant that they were not playing with the partners whom they had diligently trained with during the holidays, a handicap which might have cost them a victory. This was a bitter disappointment to some, notably to guys’ captain Wen Jun (Shengqiu’s usual doubles partner), whose patient devotion to KE table tennis and resolve to stick with his team through IHG were left unfulfilled as he was not allowed to play in the IHG on a technicality, making this a bittersweet prelims for this responsible ‘face of table tennis’ in hall. Adding to the misfortune, Su Shu, who would have played if he had not recently sprained an ankle, had to sit out the game, watching the rise and fall of the scores in some distress!

That said, our victory over Raffles reflects well on the spirit and diligence of the players, and the time and effort invested by the seniors in polishing them up to competition standard.

Thanks to all the supporters who went to watch although KE’s matches started late!
The semis will be at 8pm on 24 Jan (Wed) in MPSH 2. See you there!

20 Jan: Unfulfilled Potential! - KE Softball

After postponement due to rain last week, softball players from all the halls were hopeful that they could finally get the IHG underway! KE was drawn in the same group as Temasek and Sheares- two powerhouses of softball. However, after all the hard training, some players in the KE camp felt that we might just pull off an upset to sneak into the semi finals.

The first match saw KE pitting itself against Temasek, who sent us in to bat first. A jittery start saw KE begin their tournament sluggishly, and we were 3-down in the first innings having barely gone thru half the batting lineup. Both our captain and vice-captain, Anand and Woon Yang, led from the front, scoring home runs to give KE a slender 2-0 lead to defend. From the moment Temasek began their innings, it all went awry for us. After a slow start, with the score at 2-3 and all the bases loaded, Temasek smacked us for a home run that saw them jump to 2-7 and steamrolling through their innings from the momentum gained. In our defense, a muddy and slippery ball made it difficult to control the pitching and even as Sandiip, our pitcher, soldiered on, Temasek kept growing in confidence. Whenever the balls were hit, sloppy fielding gave Temasek easy runs and the end of their innings couldn’t come soon enough for the supporters watching on. The score at the end of the first innings read 2-23.

A pep talk during the break between innings by Woon Yang boosted the team morale a little, though our batting in the 2nd innings fared just slightly better, cutting into the massive total by a paltry 3 runs. Temasek began their 2nd innings already assured of victory but looking to add on to their tally. However, KE came back strong, restricting them to just 5 runs as the match finished 5-28. The jestful taunting by KE subs (something that commonly occurs in softball and which KE picked up quickly from Temasek) led by Ian, unsettled their batters, who succumbed to some poor hits off a commendable pitching effort by our no. 47, Dhawal, a key figure in all their dismissals.

Despite the disparity in the final score, KE’s morale was buoyed by their 2nd innings performance and it is apparent to all that this team has a lot of heart. This fact was reinforced by players like Shu hui, who, despite being clattered and injured during the 1st innings, returned to play her role as the catcher in the 2nd innings. However, if we are to have any chance of going further in this competition, we have to improve on our batting and give opposition something worthwhile to chase.

All that remains is to convert these plus points into a win on the field against a wounded Sheares side tomorrow (delayed due to rain), which lost to Temasek in the 2nd match. The winner of this match will move on to the semis and judging by the hunger of this KE team, I wouldn’t bet against them pulling off that upset!

- Dhawal
