21 Jan: The End Of An Innings! - KE Softball

The KE softball team played the rescheduled match against Sheares this morning in poor field conditions caused by excessive rain, which directed the strategies of both teams from the onset.

The main focus of this match was on the pitching rather than on the batting, and Sheares took full advantage in their 1st innings as they reached the 7 run target with 2-down. Thereafter, it was time for our 1st innings. Unfortunately for KE, we were unable to take full advantage and after the first innings, the score stood at 4-7. The ball was slippery and difficult to grip throughout the match. The terry cloth became the pitchers’ best friend for both sides in their quest to wipe off as much mud and dampness from the ball after every pitch. Despite their efforts, mostly wayward pitches meant that almost all the runs were scored off ‘walks’ (awarded to the batter when the pitcher pitches 4 balls that do not land on the strike zone).

In the 2nd innings, KE substituted their pitcher, Dhawal, midway due to poor ball control and Sandiip took over for them. A fine performance from him had Sheares pegged back, and KE was down 4-13. Unfortunately for KE, the clock had almost run down, making victory impossible for us, as in excess of 7 runs were required and no further innings would be played. Thus, our 2nd innings had an almost carnival atmosphere with the fate of the match decided.

Unfortunately, we were unable to add to our tally and the match finished 4-13, officially ending the tournament for the KE softball team, leaving us to ruminate and regroup for a more valiant and fruitful effort next year!

- Dhawal
