4th Jan: Fighters! - Girls’ Hockey
KE vs EH (0 - 0 draw)
Girls’ hockey got off to an exciting start in our first match against Eusoff. In the 1st half, our players were very aggressive. We were able to keep the ball in the opponent’s half court most of the time, and we had openings to shoot several times though none got in. In the end we drew with Eusoff, 0 - 0. It was a good beginning for our players. The forwards had proved their worth!
KE vs SH (1 - 0 win)
The second match was against SH. We attacked ferociously. And we won the match with a score of 1-0! The point was won by Esther, the captain of the team. After the match, her excited comments to this reporter were, “Of course very happy loh… I’d like to shoot one more in lahh!!”
KE vs KR (0 - 1 loss)
Kent Ridge had been in excellent form for the whole day’s matches (in the end it was the only hall which managed to score any goals against Temasek that day). We lost the game at 0-1. Our players defended very well, especially the fullback players Jolene and Lynn, despite being quite stressed by the approach of the ball towards our gate almost all the time! Our midfield players and forwards too put up a good fight. They tried to hold and grab any chance to attack. Magnus, the coach of the girls’ hockey team, followed the match closely and gave many commands and advice from the sidelines.
KE vs RH (0 - 0 draw)
The fourth match was with RH. By now, our players were quite tired as they did not have as many substitutes as the other teams, but they didn’t give up! The match ended at 0 - 0.
KE vs TH (0 - 2 loss)
The match which was the most worthy of mention was our final one: KE against Temasek.
Before the match, we already knew that no matter whether we won or not, we could only get 4th position, the same as last year. But we were determined to fight this battle for the glory of the hall! There was a big gap in calibre between our players and Temasek’s, which became apparent as soon as the match began. We had faced the same problem in our match against KR. Their players were stronger and faster, and most of the time the ball was controlled by them in our half court. However, despite the big gap, our girls ran all over the field to fight for the Hockey team and for KE7! Every KE supporter was applauding the “NEVER-GIVE-UP” spirit of the girls.
…Ouch!
Lynn and Qian Hong both suffered direct hits by the ball on their foreheads! (It is impossible to know how painful it is to be hit by a hockey ball unless you have tasted it!) Fortunately, they lived, although they were knocked to the ground. When all the KEVIIans were worrying about their fallen players, they stood up… and even managed big smiles on their faces! This is the spirit of KE. Never be beaten by the opponent. Even if you are injured, never show the pain in front of others.. On the contrary, show your most beautiful smile to say every KEVIIan is a warrior! [Editor's note: True hall spirit! But of course, after you finish smiling, you should seek treatment as soon as you can.. must take injuries seriously hor, then can live to fight another day!]
Though we lost the game in the end, no one could say that KE has ever given up!
